Please allow me to thank EDEK for hosting this bi-communal meeting but also thanks the Slovak Embassy and especially the ambassador Dr. Tomova for the valued contribution towards the success of this forum.

We strongly believe that a comprehensive settlement for the Cyprus issue could be achieved. Our priority is the reunification of our homeland and the creation of conditions which will allow Cypriots, both Greek and Turkish, to live together peacefully within a modern European state which will allow prosperity and a creative future.

Both communities should work sincerely in order to reduce the distance they have in regards to their disagreements. With mutual trust and understanding, the different demands could be bridged. I would like to repeat that the key element towards a viable and workable solution is the citizens of our country, the people. We are aware that whatever will be the solution provided, no matter how well-written or balanced will be, it needs people consensus and genuine willingness in order to succeed.

The Democratic Rally Party is opening widely its doors to the society. We want freshness and creative participation from all the productive people, especially that of young people. It is our challenge to open the way to them, to lead the way having them aside.

2013 is the European year of Citizens. There are really good mechanisms within the European Union which could be used to allow us embrace and include our people in the negotiations process of the Cyprus problem. Hence, we will follow the good practices provided from the European Union.

Cyprus is a full member state of the EU for almost 10 years now and any settlement of the Cyprus issue should be in compliance with EU’s values, principles and acquis communautaire.

Certainly, European Union’s values and principles should be one of the most important pillars that must be taken into account while planning the solution of the Cyprus issue. This set of values and principles could be the safeguard towards a sustainable and viable solution of the Cyprus issue. The settlement must respect the above, because in different case is condemned to fail. At the same time, on our way to resolution, we need a targeted policy without ambiguities or omissions. All of us should work collectively with strategic planning.

In the future a unified Cyprus, all hopes and prospects of Cypriots, Greek and Turkish, belong in the sphere of Europe. We believe that Turkey share the same vision as well. In this context, a cooperative Turkey is included.

The existing status quo of division does not allow us to deal with new major contemporary challenges in a global world. A divided island cannot seize the opportunities its people deserve, cannot meet the expectations of the new generation.

Let’s build together the future of the younger generations. A unified country will multiply its economic capacity. A just and viable solution, along with security, will bring huge economic growth and prosperity. With the European values and principles incorporated in the right solution of the Cyprus issue, all human rights of every citizen of this country, Greek-Cypriot and Turkish-Cypriot would be protected and guaranteed.
